Documents and suppling artwork for printers
There are two basic ways for digital printers to receive artwork. As a high resolution PDF (preferred a more up-to-date) or all gathered together (usually, QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign, Illustrator document with images and fonts).
First this happens there are many things to check in the work of art that is covered in my article entitled Preparing artwork for print http://robcubbon.com/wordpress/?page_id=26
But suppose you did this. Everyone is happy with what they saw of work and must go ... now ... What are you doing?
Collecting art
This is becoming a less preferred method. Basically, it means all gathered together, QuarkXpress Adobe InDesign or Illustrator document with images and fonts. (Obviously I'm assuming that you are the kind of character and are therefore free to send them out). The reason is less preferred and because of problems with this method is its compatibility.
You must make sure that the version of software that the printers. You may need to save the document to a previous version of Quark. I remember Quark save up 6 files in Quark 5 so that I could make them open in Quark 5 to Quark 4. We hope that does not happen anymore! It 'an example of how this method is open to error.
Sometimes printers will find that the characters are not loaded correctly Another thing that can go wrong.
If this is what you do, here how.
In Quark, go to File> Collect for Output, you are prompted to save the document if you have not already, check in all boxes, although it is not necessary to include color profiles. Select where you want the saved folder, press OK and will do it for you.
In InDesign, go package file> ... Continues to strike and, again, I would check every check box. And the same with Quark select where you want to save the folder, press OK and they'll do it for you. InDesign Preflight has a good feature on the File menu. Check if the characters are OK and warns the user of errors with color space images.
Illustrator does not has no collection or set of tools so you must do so in the old fashioned way! > Find Font Type Go ... and write your own font. Go> Connections window and note all pictures connected and where they are on your system. Embedded images not be detected. Then you find the fonts on your system make sure you get exactly the right file names, Adobe Garamond ITC Garamond is not the same. A more usual for a graphics file Illustrator is to incorporate all the images and type to turn into outlines and then deny all the need to collect works of art.
But this brings me neatly to the preferred alternative to collecting works of art, high resolution PDF.
High resolution PDF
A PDF or Portable Document Format, is that you want to use a lot of syllables is a file format open created by Adobe Systems, encapsulating the description of a composite document that includes text, fonts, images and vector graphics.
The advantages of PDF High resolution on art collections are numerous, here are four
* There is only one file loads
* This is a smaller size
* There will be no problem with the fonts not loading or images fail because ... er ... characters and images are embedded in the PDF.
* You have a better idea of as the print job.
There are 101 ways to make a PDF. Many printers will specify their own and can also provide your Acrobat Distiller settings. However, many Sometimes I am asked to provide a high resolution PDF for a wide range of printing. This is what I made on the basis of several guidelines that I have read.
First of all, reliable high quality PDF can be easily exported directly from InDesign and Illustrator. The same can not be said for Quark. Do not, repeat not, send a PDF for printers that was exported directly from Quark.
How to create a PostScript file from Quark
The only way to make a good quality PDF from Quark is to first create a PostScript file. Go File> Print and click the Layout tab first. Here you can specify whether you want the layout to be output as spreads or not (usually not) and registration should be set centered to put crosses on each of the separation PDF. Leave everything else unchanged.
Then click the next tab which is the setup program. For Printer Description choose Adobe PDF 7.0 or any version of Acrobat you have loaded. To select the paper size Custom and enter a value of about 40 mm more than the width (twice if you're printing spreads), leave the height of the paper. Paper Offset and Page Gap should both zero. Reduce or enlarge: 100% of course. Leave the Page Orientation to landscape and positioning on the left edge.
The next tab in the window Quark Print dialog is output. In Print The colors must be CMYK composite, even if it is a single work or have special colors, the Halftoning should be conventional. Resolution usually go for 2400 dpi, but the frequency (that is where guidelines differ wildly) something between 175 and 400 lpi, depending on the quality of output. 175 lpi sufficient for the average magazine ad quality.
The next event is on Options. Leave Quark PostScript Error Handler uncontrolled. Page Flip should be None, outgoing Normal. Data, Binary. These are all defaults. However, Overprint EPS Black, I usually leave out of control, but at full resolution tiff output should definitely be controlled.
If the document is to bleed then specify, of course, in vivo usually form as 3 mm clipping bleeding edge.
Finally, ignore OPI, check the preview to see if the crop and bleed to return to the Black Square and if you have a Profiles tab, make sure that all profiles are out as This can create havoc for the PDF.
Finally, the actual saving of the PostScript file. In the Print dialog box, click the Print button at the bottom, in the box next where it says Copies & Pages Output Options, select the drop-down menu, then check the Save as PostScript files selected, press Save. If there are no output options drop down menu is a shortcut to the bottom left of the dialog in the form of another button called PDF with a triangle pointing down, click Save PDF. A browser window appears, select where you want the PostScript file saved then press Save and then back to the Quark Print dialog where you hit Print.
Then go get a coffee!
Once Quark has finished creating the PostScript file that needs only to be dragged in Acrobat Distiller to be turned into a PDF. But before discussing which setting to choose Distiller'm going to explain the (much simpler!) The process of direct creation of PDF from Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
How to create a PDF from Illustrator and InDesign
In Adobe Illustrator, go File> Save As ... and select Adobe PDF as the format, click where you want saved from the PDF and press Save. In the Save PDF dialog box that follows you can choose the preset Adobe which I'll discuss later. The tabs on the left side will be largely left to the default presets. But you can also add crops and bleed as desired and it is worth looking through them to see if anything looks wrong or if there are warnings. Then hit Save PDF.
Adobe InDesign is a process very similar only this time go File> Export ... and select Adobe PDF as size, choose where you want the PDF to be saved and click Export. In the Export Adobe PDF dialog box that follows you can choose the preset that Adobe is discussed soon. Again, you should add crops and bleed as you want, but leave the default presets as you choose, just browse to check if everything looks OK. Then hit Export.
What Set Distiller / Adobe preset I choose?
There is a very good article and discussion about this here http://indesignsecrets.com/choosing-the-right-pdf-preset.php .
The three default presets that you should be concerned for the output high-resolution printing are: PDF/X-1a: 2001, PDF/X-3: 2002 quality printing.
The first two follow preset PDF / X standard. To reduce errors and allow sharing of files, Adobe has worked with suppliers and professional users to develop PDF / X family of standards designed for printing workflows. They are a good choice if you're not sure what the printer wants. Both PDF / X preset in InDesign Acrobat compatibility September 4 that flattens transparency. Therefore, if you choose one of these, be sure to select the high resolution while flattener presets the Advanced tab.
PDF/X-1a: 2001 is designed to provide the most robust and, to some extent, the less flexible delivery of data in PDF format. You necessary that the color of all objects expressed in CMYK or spot colors, prepared for the printing conditions provided.
PDF/X-3: 2002 allows the flexibility a bit 'more in that color managed workflows are also supported - items in Lab, and with attached ICC source can also be used. This PDF / X preset is similar to PDF/X-1a unless it also supports embedded RGB profiles and color management. This standard is more widely used in Europe and North America.
Use the Print Quality predefined high-quality business printing where the printer is comfortable getting a PDF file with live transparency that is rare. It 's a good choice if your printer being sent to an imagesetter or CTP from Acrobat 7 Professional.
If you send an ad in a magazine that may be required for a "pass4press" PDF, if this is the case, you can download a zip file or the presets. Joboptions http://www.pass4press.com to their website and once downloaded and unzipped, go to Settings> Add Adobe PDF Settings ... in Distiller and select the file. The settings are similar to PDF / X family.
With all the presets you should always check several things. It is advisable to add crops and bleed and remember to check that the flattener is set to High Resolution.
Paramount to this is the printer. Contact with the printer and identify their preferred option.
Verification of good quality PDF
So now you have your high resolution PDF on your desktop. Open it in Acrobat Professional and have a good look at all the jobs could be the last time you see him and maybe you can see some errors.
One thing I always do is go to Advanced> Output Preview in Acrobat Professional as you can see here all the separations individually. Make sure you have a CMYK simulation profile selected at the top. Here spot colors can be controlled and if the items you want are overprinting or knocking out.
Moreover, run your mouse over a job you can see the percentage of CMYK and spot color values in the Output Preview panel. This is your last chance to see if your colors will be printed correctly.
Go to Advanced and make sure Overprint Preview is selected. In this way, write a screen representation of working with overprints and not selected by default. So if you had black type overprinting on a colored background will appear darker, while with this preview. This can be a life saver as white elements that have been incorrectly set to overprint will disappear here and on some presses. Back to your distiller advanced options and deselect Preserve overprint settings.
Markzware FlightCheck and Enfocus PitStop
I recall at this point that there is software out there that is considered excellent control prepress. Markzware FlightCheck should be used on Quark, Illustrator and InDesign files, and Enfocus PitStop can control print PDF files.
Personally, I found them very useful, but are highly regarded in the industry and are ready to eat my words.
Sending files
Now you need transport, physical or digital files to printers.
If time is tight, almost always, you can then burn a CD or DVD and put it in the post with your tests or low resolution PDF format clearly marked for the layout.
If time is tight there are a variety of options. If the file is less than 10 MB, then you can try e-mail, of course you have to check with the receiver. ISDN still live in the UK, although it has largely been superseded by a DSL technology.
FTP is the preferred method of transporting large amounts of information between two computers on the Internet. To do this it is better to use some sort of software FTP or "client." There are many customers out there for Mac and PC is shareware and for money. For PC users, FileZilla is generally recommended. Personally, Mac users, Fetch and Transmit I would recommend if you want to spend money and if not Cyberduck (for Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later).
To upload to a remote site must three bits of information from them to enter the FTP client's IP address, username and password. If these are accepted you can view the remote site and enter files there.
